The Yellow Jackets won their first district basketball game this season in a tough contest against Brownwood Tuesday.

The Stephenville Yellow Jackets may have finally found their stride this season as they defeated the Brownwood Lions 53-47 for their first district victory of the year.

Even though Stephenville came out on top, it wasn’t an easy affair. Brownwood took advantage early of some good shooting and shaky Stephenville defense and ran out to an 17-12 lead at the end of the first quarter. From there the Yellow Jackets cut Brownwood’s lead down to two before halftime as the two teams hit the locker room with the score 23-21.

However, the second half was where Stephenville came to play. In the 16 minutes of game time, Stephenville outscored Brownwood 32-24, including an 18-point third quarter. Even with the high scoring frame, the Yellow Jackets found themselves trailing 41-39 with 6:37 to go, but eventually retook a one point lead with 2:15 remaining before finally slamming the door shut on the Lions.

Senior Josh Nowell led the way for Stephenville as he finished with 14 points in the game. Also helping out on the stat sheet was Darian Brown who added another 10 points, while Cameron Frazier scored six.

The Yellow Jackets now sit at 1-4 in district play and will look to improve that mark next Tuesday when Mineral Wells comes to town.
