Bees finish each set strong in sweep
After battling 4A and 5A opponents - many of them state powers - throughout the early part of the season, Stephenville finally met a 3A foe Tuesday night.
In just their fourth match against a 3A or 2A opponent - they faced 3A No. 1 Abilene Wylie twice and met 2A Poth in a tournament - the Honeybees dominated the end of each set in a sweep of West.
Senior middle blocker Dani Huckabee fired six straight serves to finish the opening set, the Honeybees scored five of the final seven to win an even tighter second, and the Bees landed nine of the last 11 in the third for the 25-20, 25-22, 25-18 victory at Gandy Gym.
It was just their second home match, with the third on deck. Stephenville (14-16), winner of six of its last eight, hosts Graham at 6 p.m. Friday.
Huckabee's six aces kept West's defense off-balance, while the blocking of Natalie Tiner shook the Lady Trojans' offense.
Tiner had 10 kills and posted a .556 attack percentage. Kristin Kaiser led with 11 kills and hit .231. Brooke Harvick hit .625, posting five kills on just eight attacks without an error.
Huckabee and Sheridan Stokes each had six kills for the Bees, and Huckabee led the team with 16 digs. Tiner and Kaiser each added aces to Huckabee's service assault, giving Stephenville eight for the game.
Chrislyn Wells tallied 16 assists and Tiara Green had 15. Tiner had seven digs and Stokes and Wells each added five.
