TSU seniors cited in Texas Football magazine
Tarleton State University football senior All-American defenders Ronnell Wilson and Devin Hafford were named to Dave Campbell's Texas Football 2020 Preseason All-Texas Small College team on Wednesday.
To qualify, a player must participate at a four-year institution in Texas that plays below the FBS level. The All-Texas Small College team consist of NCAA FCS Division 1 programs, Division II and Division III.
Both Wilson and Hafford are four-year players for the Texans entering their senior seasons. Wilson, a first team All-LSC linebacker in 2019, ranked in the top 10 in the LSC in tackles with 81 total tackles, 7 tackles for loss, and 2 interceptions.
Wilson was named a Don Hansen All-American to go along with two all-region honors as a junior, including a D2CCA first-team selection. Wilson was a team leader on the Tarleton defense that ranked top five in the nation in team tackles for a loss (No. 2; 10.9/game), team passing efficiency defense (No. 3; 90.22/game), and guided the Tarleton defense that also ranked top 15 in the nation in sacks (No. 9; 3.36/game), scoring defense (No. 13; 15.9/game), and rushing defense (No. 13; 92.0/game).
For his career, Wilson has 214 tackles and 13 tackles for loss.
Hafford is coming off a season-ending injury in the 2019 opener but is already projected to bounce back after being a three-time All-American defensive back as a junior in 2018.
Hafford was a finalist for the Cliff Harris Award for the best small college defensive player in the nation that season. He was also a D2CCA first team all-region winner, the LSC Defensive Back of the Year, and first team All-LSC. In his breakout year, Hafford ranked No. 26 in the nation with 15 passes defended and posted 34 tackles.
He was second on the team with four interceptions and 14 pass breakups and also blocked a kick. Hafford helped lead the Tarleton defense that ranked No. 9 in the nation in points allowed (16.5). For Hafford's career, he has 168 tackles, 39 passes defended and six interceptions.
Tarleton is transitioning to the NCAA Division I level as an FCS Independent on July 1, 2020. The Texans will open on the road at Sam Houston State on Sept. 5. The first home game for the Texans is Sept. 19 against UT Permian Basin.
