Hailey's 26 points not enough as Eastern New Mexico hands TexAnns first LSC loss, 73-68
The TexAnns perfect start to Lone Star Conference play came to an end Saturday night as Eastern New Mexico spoiled a 2-0 road-trip for Tarleton with a fourth quarter comeback.
There wasn't much that separated the two LSC teams Saturday, especially for the first three quarters of the game.
Tarleton managed to outscore the Greyhounds in the first and third quarters and tied them with 18 points in the second. Despite that, Tarleton only held a 32-30 lead at halftime, with almost half of their points coming from senior Ikpeaku Iwobi whom scored 14 points in the first half while going 6-10 from the field.
While Iwobi had a stellar performance on offense in the first half, it was Mackenzie Hailey who dominated the second.
Hailey scored 18 of what was a team high 26 points over the last 20 minutes, including bringing down five rebounds.
However, Hailey and Iwobi's performances were all for naught as Eastern New Mexico switched the tide near mid-way through the fourth quarter.
Tarleton built their lead to as much as five points in the game's final frame, but the Greyhounds tied the TexAnns at 56 with 6:36 remaining in the game. For the remainder of the game, Eastern New Mexico outscored Tarleton 17-12, while outscoring them 29-20 in the entire quarter.
Other TexAnn scorers included Travanti Downes (8), Bailey Wipff (7), Baylee Peck (5), Tiara Tatum (3) and Kylie Collins (3).
The TexAnns are now 4-5 on the year after the New Mexico road trip and are 3-1 in LSC play. They'll be back in action on Tuesday when they host Lubbock Christian at 5:30 p.m.
