TexAnns split on opening day

Tarleton State split two matches to open its 2012 volleyball campaign in the Oredigger Classic hosted by Colorado Mines in Golden, Colo. Friday.

The TexAnns swept St. Joseph's College in three after falling to to Arkansas-Fort smith in a five-set marathon.

Tarleton dominated St. Joseph's from the outset, winning 25-20, 25-19, 25-17 behind 11 kills from middle blocker Nikki McNorton and six from Ashley Rine. Danielle Barker had 20 assists and Marissa Banda added 17. Emily Klein and Katie Covell had 14 digs and 13, respectively.

Tarleton couldn't overcome a host of errors in its 22-25, 15-25, 25-16, 25-20, 15-17 loss to Arkansas-Fort Smith.

The TexAnns had 11 errors and hit just 0.88 percent in the opening set and saw UAFS jump ahead quickly and control the second.

Tarletn had 23 kills and saw UAFS combine for 22 errors over the third and fourth sets, but the TexAnns had seven miscues in the short fifth-set loss.

Stacie Murrah led Tarleton with 17 kills and a .433 hitting percentage in the loss, while McNorton added 12 kills. Barker had 38 assists and Klein tallied 30 digs.
