In the 2017-2018 all-District 8-4A girls basketball voting, the Stephenville Honeybees placed three on the first team, two on the second team and had a freshman who was named Sixth Player of the Year.

SHS seniors Payton Wall and Hailey Martin, along with junior Jayci Morton, were named first-team all-district by vote of the coaches.

The Stephenville girls on the second team are seniors Jordan Carter and Tess Baker.

SHS sophomore Maddie Carter received all-district honorable mention.

Alee McClendon, a freshman post who was brought up from the SHS junior varsity during the season, earned lots of playing time in district play and was selected as the seven-team league’s Sixth Player of the Year.

Morton was an all-region and all-state selection a year ago, coming out of her sophomore season. Wall, Jordan Carter and Morton were first-team all-district last year, and Martin and Baker were second-team picks.

Coach Alan Thorpe’s Honeybees made the playoffs as the third-place team out of District 8-4A. They defeated Mineral Wells and Burkburnett to reach the third round (regional quarterfinals) of the Region I-4A playoffs before being eliminated by Abilene Wylie. They finished the season with a 19-15 record. A year ago, Thorpe guided the team to the regional tournament and a 27-8 mark — with a No. 10 state ranking — before bowing out with a loss to seventh-ranked Levalland in the regional semifinals.

In addition to McClendon, the other superlative selections in the district voting were Ally Andress of Glen Rose, overall Most Valuable Player, and Hailey Ibarra of Glen Rose, Defensive MVP (both by unanimous vote); along with Jasmine Bailey of Midlothian Heritage, Offensive MVP, and Dani Wallace, Newcomer of the Year, also from Heritage.

Glen Rose won the district title and Heritage was the runner-up, while Stephenville was followed in the standings by fourth-place Godley. In addition to Andress and Ibarra, second-ranked Glen Rose had two on the first team and two on the second team.
