The Stephenville Honeybees opened the Class 4A girls basketball playoffs Monday night in Weatherford with a blowout bi-district victory over Mineral Wells, 63-32.

The Honeybees will move into the area round of the playoffs against Burkburnett Thursday at the high school gym in Jacksboro. The starting time for that game is set for 6:30 p.m.

Coach Alan Thorpe’s 18-14 Honeybees reached the semifinals of the Region I-4A tournament last season, when they were ranked No. 10 in the state. They were eliminated by Levelland, the No. 7-ranked team at that time.

Jayci Morton and Tesslie Baker led the Honeybees in scoring with 10 points each, and Presley Wall added nine.

“We played really well,” Thorpe said. “We’ve been playing well, and we’re continuing to. We shot extremely well.

“They (the Honeybees) are a playoff-experienced team, and I don’t think they got rattled at all. We pressed quite a bit early, and had success early.”

Stephenville outscored the Lady Rams 12-5 in the opening quarter, and 15-5 in the second for a 27-10 halftime advantage. The Honeybees picked up the scoring pace in the second half, with 18 points in each of the final two quarters while allowing 7 in the third and 15 in the fourth.

With the comfortable lead, Thorpe was able to do lots of substituting in the second half, including five junior varsity players who made the trip and suited out.

The winner of the area-round playoff against Burkburnett will move to the third round next week against the winner of the area playoff between Abilene Wylie and Midlothian Heritage.
