Wet weather dusrupts weekend sports plans
Rainy weather has once again disrupted weekend sports plans in and around Stephenville.
Softball and baseball games for Stephenville High School and Tarleton State’s softball TexAnns were all affected by soggy weather and a forecast for more.
The Honeybees were slated to open their District 6-4A season at Brownwood after a Tuesday rainout of a non-district matchup against Cisco.
“Tonight’s games cancelled,” read a text from SHS coach Russell Mayes. “Plan B will be home games (Saturday evening, weather permitting. Plan C- Monday at Brownwood. Plan D – Monday here.”
As it turned out, Plan D was implemented and the ‘Bees will host the Lions Monday with games starting at 5 p.m.
Likewise, the Yellow Jackets’ baseball team had an unexpected Friday evening off.
“Stephenville baseball cancelled,” texted coach James Boxley Friday afternoon. The ‘Jackets were able to get their mid-week non-district game in at Lorena on Tuesday, They were slated to take on No. 4 Waco Robinson Friday before the wet weather rolled in. Stephenville takes on Ranger College’s JV Tuesday in a final tune-up for district action. The Yellow Jackets begin 6-4A play at home Friday against Mineral Wells.
The TexAnn’s four-game series against Midwestern State was been postponed to Sunday and Monday at the Tarleton Softball Complex. The two Lone Star Conference squads are scheduled to play a doubleheader starting at 3 p.m. on Sunday followed by another twin bill Monday, starting at 5 p.m.
The TexAnns (13-11, 0-2 in the Lone Star Conference) are riding a four-game winning streak with Midwestern (15-10, 2-6) having lost its last two games.
Tarleton was washed out of its last LSC series, four games on March 1 and 2.
In addition, a scheduled youth baseball tournament hosted by the Stephenville Sox, has been postponed.
The” 23-team, three age-class event drew entries from across north and central Texas.
“The tournament for this weekend has been cancelled due to rain,” said organizer Keith Phillips in a Friday e-mail. “We will be looking for another weekend in the future to host this event. Maybe May or June.”
