Foster's Home gears up for annual auction

Foster's Home for Children President/CEO Glenn Newberry and Vice President of Development Lacy Barton are looking forward to the annual auction coming March 2-3, which supports the home financially each year.

Foster’s Home for Children has been serving area children for 58 years and will host its 15th annual auction at 6 p.m. Friday, March 2, and 9 a.m. Saturday, March 3, at the campus in Stephenville.

“I love this event because it offers the perfect invitation for anyone to be a part of the good work happening at Foster’s Home,” said Vice President of Development Lacy Barton. “People can come to look at stuff, bid on stuff and my favorite — buy stuff!”

Friday will kick off with “Storage Wars” style box lots in the auction barn and continue Saturday with an outdoor auction, free BBQ lunch, silent auction with some big items being auctioned off at the conclusion; vehicles, boats and fibergrate.

Other items will include furniture, tools, exercise equipment and home decor. 

“We are bringing in some new ideas that I am extremely excited about,” Barton said. “Without spoiling the surprise, I’ll say that our new process will make things more visible to everyone, even the back row sitters. All items for auction can be viewed on our campus starting at 9 a.m. Friday. Absentee bids are welcome.”

Two years ago the auction raised $132,000 for the children’s home and has grown quite a bit from the first event.

“It was right about $28,000 the first year,” Barton said in a previous interview. “A lot of it is just more people coming out and seeing that it’s a good cause. Our kids take turns carrying things on the stage to be auctioned, so everybody gets to see who they’re helping.”

Foster’s Home offers residential group care and foster care within a 50-mile radius. Children are provided counseling and tutoring and are taken on trips to help enrich their lives beyond room and board.

“(The auction) provides our annual funding for the home and the fundraiser has been a substantial way to support our work,” said Foster’s Home President/CEO Glenn Newberry. “This is one of the times the public can come out and interact with our kids and some of them will buy something and donate it back to be sold again, which shows they care about the kids, not the items.”

Foster’s Home houses approximately 60 children.

“I enjoy, more than anything, the interaction between our donors and our kids and the staff, and it’s grown into a phenomenal event,” Newberry said. “Everything goes smooth and people are here for the right reasons. Plus, you get some good bargains.”
