EDNA, Texas (AP) — A South Texas sheriff says five children are missing following an early morning fire that destroyed a home.

Jackson County Sheriff AJ Louderback said Tuesday it was too early to confirm whether the children were killed in the fire but that investigators believe some in the family of eight perished.

Louderback says emergency personnel arrived at the mobile home shortly after 5 a.m. Tuesday in Edna, about 25 miles northeast of Victoria. He says two adults, a 32-year-old woman and 30-year-old man, were found outside the home with a child, whose age was unknown.

The parents told firefighters five children were inside the home, which was engulfed in flames when authorities arrived.

Louderback says the oldest child in the home was 16.

The cause of the fire wasn't immediately clear.
