An hours-long search ended tragically Sunday night when authorities located the body of a man who was reported missing earlier this afternoon.

The man, who is reportedly in his mid-50s, was found in a creek shortly after 6 p.m. Sunday, according to Erath County Sheriff Tommy Bryant.

His name has not yet been released.

Bryant said the search began about 1 p.m. Sunday.

"This man was renting a space from a couple," Bryant said. "After they got home from church they went to their barn and found a firearm and blood."

The couple reportedly looked for the man and when they couldn't find him, called the sheriff's office.

A DPS helicopter and tracking dogs assisted sheriff's deputies who followed a trail of blood for more than a mile from the man's home before he was found dead in a creek of an apparent gunshot wound.

Bryant said it appears the gunshot was self-inflicted.

"The reason we believe this was self-inflicted is because he apparently tried to kill himself about four months ago," Bryant said. "It's a sad situation."
