Tragedy in Dublin

Accident scene

A sixth grade Dublin student is dead after he was struck and killed by an 18-wheeler while riding a horse Tuesday in Dublin.

Dublin Police Chief Lannie Lee said the boy was traveling from the west side of town near Dollar General on Trowbridge Street when his horse reportedly ran in front of oncoming traffic.

“According to witness statements, he was attempting to rein the horse back, but he was unable to do so and the horse ran out in front of the truck and was struck on the left side,” Lee said.

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene; the horse was also killed.

According to a witness, the young man saw the truck and was trying to turn the horse or stop it.

The victim’s name had not been released as of press time pending the investigation. However, a Dublin school official confirmed late Tuesday night it was a sixth grade student and that teachers were notified to be prepared to handle the situation today.
