Tarleton libraries to host Research Impact Challenge

STEPHENVILLE — Tarleton State University is launching its first Research Impact Challenge for researchers, aspiring academics and others interested in increasing their scholarly impact. The challenge starts Monday, Feb. 15,  and everyone is welcome to join.

The activities for Tarleton’s challenge are based on the University of Oklahoma Impact Challenge and the 30-day Impact Challenge by Stacy Konkiel. Both focus on introducing researchers and academics to basic tools and issues over a seven-day period. Instructions for all 30 challenges can be found at https://libraries.ou.edu/impactchallenge.

The Research Impact Challenge was created through a cooperative effort between Katie Pierce Farrier and Dr. Christy Tabors with Tarleton libraries and Dr. Leslie Leach and Dr. Amber Harris Bozer at the university’s Center for Educational Excellence.

Each day of the challenge participants complete a short activity designed to help them boost findability of their work, build their professional online presence, and connect them to peers and colleagues.

Some of the challenges are hands-on, like creating a Google Scholar Profile or using a reference management tool. Others emphasize the educational aspect and seek to promote understanding of scholarly communication topics and campus resources available.

Scholarly communications are the processes or tools that researchers and academics use to create, evaluate and communicate their work. These include publishing articles, tracking journal citations, presenting at conferences and networking with collaborators.

Increasing scholarly impact draws attention to researchers’ work, strengthens online presence and enables communicating research more effectively.
