Stephenville ISD was awarded a $25,000 matching grant from Oncor’s School Matching Grant Program for installing a high efficiency air-cooling system at Gilbert Intermediate School this summer.

The School Matching Grant Program helps schools save energy and money by implementing energy efficiency improvements. The high efficiency cooling system will save nearly 26,000 kilowatt-hours of energy annually, equivalent to the carbon dioxide emissions of approximately 2,000 gallons of gasoline, according to U. S. Environmental Protection Agency calculations.

“Oncor’s School Matching Grant Program has allowed us to make great strides in energy management over the last two year,” said SISD Director of Maintenance Keith Starnes.

This is not the first matching grant the District has received from Oncor. All public schools receiving electric services through Oncor wires are eligible to apply for matching grant funding to pay for a portion of energy efficiency upgrades.

“Schools are part of the fabric of the communities Oncor serves. Oncor is excited about this unique grant program that helps schools to invest in energy efficiency improvements,” said Oncor Manager Ken Harris. “This is exactly the type of energy-saving project the School Matching Grant Program was created to encourage.”

Grants are awarded for up to 50 percent of the cost of energy efficiency project installations, up to a maximum of $25,000. Grant applications are judged on several criteria, including demonstrated financial need, the expected energy savings of the project and the speed with which it can be completed

Dr. Darrell Floyd, superintendent of SISD, stated, “Oncor has become an important SISD business partner. Working together has allowed several district energy saving projects to be completed.”
