The Texas Department of Agriculture recently released its state dairy inventory and production review from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's monthly milk production reports. 

Annual Dairy Review - Texas

The annual milk production in 2020 for Texas totaled 14.8 billion pounds, up 7% from 2019. Texas' milk cow inventory on Jan. 1, 2021, was 615,000 head, up 6% from Jan. 1, 2020.

Production per cow averaged 24,926 pounds for 2020, up 2% from 2019. The annual milk production in 2020 for the U.S. totaled 223 billion pounds, up 2% from 2019.

The U.S. milk cow inventory on Jan. 1, 2021, was 9.44 million head, up 1% from Jan. 1, 2020. Nationally, production per cow averaged 23,777 pounds for 2020, up 2% from 2019.

Cash receipts from marketings of milk during 2020 for Texas totaled $2.75 billion, up 4% from 2019. For the United States, receipts totaled $40.5 billion, up slightly from the previous year.

Producer returns in Texas for 2020 averaged $18.60 per hundredweight, 3% lower than 2019 while producer returns for the nation averaged $18.25 per hundredweight, down 2% from last year.
