DENTON - The Tarleton State TexAnn basketball teamís bid to remain undefeated in the Lone Star Conference fell short Saturday as the TexAnns lost at Texas Womanís in Denton, 66-62.

The TexAnns, who led by 11 at the half, were outscored 38-23 in the second half by the home team. Tarleton shot just 26 percent from the floor in the second period, and fell to 9-4 overall and 2-1 in the LSC South. TWU improved to 2-2 in the South and 8-8 overall.

Senior Katie Crawford scored 21 points after starting the game five for five from beyond the three-point arc, but she missed two key shots at the end of the contest.

DíAnna Dingler started the game with a three for the TexAnns 11 seconds into the contest. Brandi Crouch then had two free throws before Chelsea Cook had a jumper to put TWU on top 4-3. Krystal Cole and Margaret Wimibsh traded baskets before Cole and Cook did the same. TWU led 8-7 with 16:50 on the clock.

JoAnne Jones had a jumper before a Chelsi Thrailkill three put TWU ahead 11-9 with 14:28 on the clock. Cole then had a three for the TexAnns to put Tarleton ahead by one 42 seconds later. Jessica Durr returned the lead to the home team before a Wimbish jumper gave the Pioneers a 15-12 lead with 10:57 on the clock.

The two teams traded baskets with the Pioneers ahead by five (20-15) with 8:15 remaining in the first half. Crawford had a jumper for the TexAnns on the return trip down the floor before Cole was fouled shooting a three. The freshman hit all three foul shots to tie the game at 20 with 7:17 remaining in the first half. Tarletonís Sassy Pyburn and Jennifer Schilb then traded buckets to make it 22-22.

Shardae OíNeal had two free throws for Tarleton, but Maggy Deweber tied the game at 24 with 5:20 remaining. Crawford had a three for Tarleton to spark a 15-4 run by the TexAnns to finish the first half. Tarleton had buckets by Crawford, Jones and Brittnie Haley to help the TexAnns take a 39-28 halftime advantage.

Crouch opened an 8-1 run for the Pioneers to start the second half. TWU cut the lead to four before Pyburn put the ball in the hoop for the TexAnns at the 16:12-mark to make it 42-36 Tarleton. Cook had a free throw for the Pioneers, but Crawford had another three to increase the advantage to eight (45-37) with 15:47 on the clock.

Wimbish and Crouch had back-to-back jumpers for the home team to cut the lead to four with 15 minutes left, and neither team scored again until Cole had a free throw at the 11:09-point to make it 46-41 Tarleton. Wimbish had a jumper before Durr added a free throw to cut the lead to one. Then, Thrailkill had a three to put the Pioneers on top 47-46 with 9:42 remaining.

Dingler had a bucket for the TexAnns to put Tarleton up by one, but Cook tied the game at 48 with 8:39 remaining with a free throw.

With 6:54 remaining, Wibish had two free throws beofre a Deweber three put TWU ahead by five a minute later. Haley had a jumper for Tarleton to cut the lead to three before Crawford tied the game with 4:43 on the clock (53-53). Durr had a layup prior to another three by Crawford which put the TexAnns ahead 56-55 with 3:26 left in the contest.

A Deweber old-fashioned three-point play at 2:58 gave the Pioneers a two-point lead, but Pyburn tied the game 17 seconds afterward with a jumper. Deweber then hit a three to return the lead to the home team before Crawford added two free throws to her total. With 2:06 on the clock, Tarleton trailed 61-60.

Durr then had a jumper before Pyburn turned the ball over on what head coach Ronnie Hearne thought should have been a foul. He was given a technical foul and Cook hit both bonus shots with 18 seconds left in the game. Deweber then added a free throw a second later after the TexAnns fouled to stop the clock.

The TexAnns trailed 66-60 when Dingler was fouled with five ticks remaining, and the junior hit both free throws to give the game its final total. TWU won the contest, 66-62.

Cole was the only other TexAnn in double digits with 11 points. Jones had seven rebounds for the TexAnns to lead the team.

Tarleton averaged .412 from the field (21-51), .467 from the arc (7-15) and .520 from the charity stripe in the loss.

Texas Womanís was led by Wimbish with 16 poitns and 11 rebounds while Deweber (15) and Cook (12) also scored in double figures.

The Pioneers shot . 446 from the floor (25-56), .357 from the arc (5-14) and .647 from the charity stripe (11-17).

TWU out-rebounded the TexAnns 38-35 and scored 21 points off of 16 Tarleton turnovers while the TexAnns converted just 11 points off of 16 Pioneer turnovers.

The TexAnns will return to action Wednesday, Jan. 24 at West Texas A&M in Canyon. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
