WACO - Kandis Brooks and Garrett Thomas each set NCAA provisional times in the hurdles and the Tarleton track and field teams combined for four top-three finishes at the Dr. Pepper/Baylor Invitational on Saturday at the Hart-Patterson Track and Field Complex in Waco.
"It was nice to get back into racing and competing," Tarleton head coach Pat Ponder said. "We are a very young team and that showed today. The spring break hurt our rhythm, but I thought overall we did a nice job of competing."
Brooks finished first in the 100-meter hurdles coming in with a time of 14.57 while Thomas finished in second-place in the 110-meter hurdles in a time of 14.61.
Casey Keeter finished fourth in the shot put, but did manage to earn a provisional mark with a throw of 52-04 feet.
"Brooks, Thomas and Keeter were the highlights of the meet," Ponder said. "I was proud of how they came out and performed today."
The other top-three performances of the day came from Jared McNeil who finished the 1500-meter run in third-place with a time of 3:57.86 and Hayden Eubanks who finished second in the shot put with a throw of 160-01 feet. It was a personal best for Eubanks who just missed the provisional mark by 0.25 of an inch (160-01.25).
"I thought as a team we did pretty well," Ponder said. "But we still have room to grow and we still have some room for improvement. If we can continue to stay focused, stay positive and stay competitive - we are going to get better as the season goes along. We have some key meets coming up with the Texas-Arlington Relays next weekend. We'll get back after it starting on Monday and looking forward to what we can do there."
Both men's and women's teams will return to action next Saturday at the UTA Relays in Arlington.
