Tarleton State showed improvements on the offensive side of the ball in its final preseason intersquad scrimmage at Memorial Stadium Thursday night.
Junior quarterback Scott Grantham, on his way to being a third-year starter this season, fired touchdown passes of 68 and nine yards early in the event. Lester Hundley was on the receiving end of the long first scoring strike, while Jahmeel Hobson hauled in the second.
The Texans’ running attack was without LSC South Preseason Player of the Year Roderick Smith, who insists he could have played despite fighting a slight hamstring injury. He says he will be in the lineup on Thursday, a statement echoed by 2008 second-team all-conference pick Jamaal Stemaer at defensive end and starting defensive tackle Ben Taifane.
The Texans’ squadmen who made up the green-clad “white” team held their own in the latter stages of the scrimmage, and even scored on an interception return.
Tarleton, which went 8-3 last year and is looking for its 10th straight winning season, kicks off its 2009 campaign against Gulf South Conference member Arkansas-Monticello at 7 p.m. Thursday at Memorial Stadium. Tarleton has won back-to-back season openers and has also won its last two home openers.
