Tarleton State is picked to finish third in the Lone Star Conference South Division basketball race this season, according to the official LSC Preseason poll released Tuesday by conference officials.

The Texans received two first place votes and 104 total points in the polling of the league’s head coaches, sports information directors and designated media.

Midwestern State is the preseason favorite with 13 first-place votes out of 21 ballots. The Mustangs garnered 125 total points in the polling.

Angelo State is second with five first-place votes and 111 points while West Texas A&M was fourth with 92 points. Fifth place Texas A&M-Kingsville picked up one first-place nod and 82 points, Abilene Christian is sixth with 48 points and Eastern New Mexico seventh with 26.

The Texans are coming off a 19-11 campaign in which they won five of their last six regular season games to earn a spot in the LSC Championship tournament.

The Texans return five regulars from last season, including senior forward Jeremiah Wilson, senior guard Effran Bryant, senior guard Tyler Rushing, junior forward Wale Ogunoye and sophomore guard Darrion Washington. They will also benefit from the return of Warren Webb, a guard who lettered as a true freshman in 2007-08 before medically redshirting last year with a knee injury.

The Texans will also have redshirt freshmen Larry Petite and Charlie Hurd, guards who did not play last year. They picked up junior college transfers Jeremy Myers, Corin Henry, Devon Hills and Chris Harrell at guard and Donta Smith at forward. Another transfer, Wes Dipprey, is a center from NCAA?Division I Cal Poly. High school signees include forwards James Thomas and Chris Marshall and guard Devon Agusi.
