STEPHENVILLE – Tarleton head softball coach Julie Mata has announced the signing of Desirae Soto to a national letter-of-intent.

Soto, a senior at William H. Taft High School in San Antonio, is a four-year varsity letterman who will play shortstop for the TexAnns beginning the 2009 season.

“Dezi is a very solid, fundamental fielder, and she shows an enthusiasm and love for the game that we look for,” Mata said. “She’s a very good hitter and I would expect her to make an immediate impact with our team in a very big way. She’s got that intensity in her eyes when she talks about the game… and it’s obvious that we just signed a great one! I’m very glad she’ll be wearing purple!”

Known as one of San Antonio’s best shortstops, Soto plays for the select softball club San Antonio Nightmare Red.

This year, she leads her team with a .438 batting average, 12 doubles and 24 runs scored. Soto is No. 10 in the San Antonio area in doubles and is second on her team with 22 runs batted in.

In 2007, Soto was named an All-Area Super team shortstop as well as a 5A all-district member when she batted .400 with a .486 on-base percentage. She scored 28 runs and led the Lady Raiders with 31 RBI. She made just two errors in 41 games at short and played every inning of every game.

Soto’s team has been a regional finalist in both 2006 and 2007. She was named a first team all-district selection at second base as a sophomore after serving as a utility player in 2005 when she played third, second, short, outfield and was a base runner for the Lady Raiders.

Soto joins Julie Norris who signed with the TexAnns last fall during the early signing period.
