CANYON - The Tarleton State Texans will try to claim their first road victory of the 2006-07 season at 8 p.m. tonight at West Texas A&M.
The Texans, 11-4 overall, will open the Lone Star Conference South Division with the game against the Buffaloes.
Tarleton is 0-4 this season on the road, but the Texans are coming off a dominating 88-42 win over Rhema Bible College Saturday, a fill-in game for Tarleton.
The Texans are led by John Davis with 19.9 points and 11.0 rebounds per contest. He has seven straight double-doubles heading into the contest.
Also averaging in double figures for Tarleton are Jeremy Gilbert (13.5) and Tim Williams (10.0). Terrence Gamble is second on the team with 5.4 rebounds per outing.
Davis is fifth in the conference in scoring and leads the LSC in rebounding. He is tops in defensive rebounds per game (7.73) and fourth in offensive rebounds (3.27).
Point guard Mike Daniels’ 4.93 assists per game is fourth on the list in the LSC while Gilbert is third in three-point field goal percentage (.469). Gamble and Davis are tied for third in the LSC with 1.40 blocks per outing.
Tarleton is averaging 46.9 percent from the floor, 30.3 percent from beyond the three-point arc and 63.8 percent from the charity stripe.
They’ve held their opponents to 39.1 percent shooting from the floor and 33.6 percent from beyond the arc.
The Texans are outscoring opponents 76.7 to 64.6 and outrebounding them 42.1 to 33.7.
Tarleton is leading the conference in scoring defense and is second in scoring margin (+12.1).
The Texans also lead the LSC in field goal percentage defense, are second in rebounding offense (42.1), rebounding margin (+8.5), offensive rebounds (13.93) and blocked shots (4.33).
The Buffs are on a two-game winning streak after defeating Abilene Christian (78-69) on Saturday and New Mexico Highlands (92-63) on Monday. The Buffs started the season 2-5 overall before going 7-2 in their last nine games. WTAMU is 9-7 overall and 1-1 in the LSC South Division. The loss came at Angelo State last Wednesday (94-84).
Damien Lolar leads the LSC with 23.9 points per game, and he is averaging 9.9 rebounds per contest.
Mike Baskerville is the only other Buff in double figures with 11.0 points per game. Tyler Cooper is second on the squad with 4.1 rebounds per outing.
The Buffs are averaging 48.7 percent shooting, 38.1 percent on 3-pointers and 67.9 percent from the line.
West Texas A&M leads the all-time series, 16-9. The Buffs won two of the three contests last year, including an 80-60 win in Canyon in the final regular season game of the year.
The Buffs also defeated Tarleton in the LSC Championship Tournament (92-85) after the Texans won the game in Stephenville (68-66).
