100 players begin workouts today

With a record 100 players reporting to campus Wednesday, Tarelton football is officially back in business.

Workouts begin today for the Texans, who open their season at home Saturday, Aug. 25, against the Tigers of East Central University. Coach Sam McElroy is pleased with the turnout and eager to get started.

“We’re ready to go,” McElroy exclaimed. “Over 50 of these guys were here working out during the summer, and that’s great. It’s also exciting to see new freshmen coming in, and to see what kind of shape their in. We’re looking forward to getting them on the field and going to work.”

McElroy said plans for today and Friday are to workout without pads and get everyone used to the practice tempo, and to get them back into the game mentally.

McElroy is beginning his third season as head coach. Under his guidance, the Texans have posted records of 7-3 in 2005, and 6-4 in 2006, seeing their playoff hopes dashed in the final game both years. Tarleton did, however, capture a share of the Lone Star Conference South Division crown last season.

Four Texans return after garnering individual conference accolades last fall. Renardrick Phillips was named LSC South Division Defensive Back of the Year for the second consecutive season, while RB Michael Sampson was elected as the South’s Offensive Back of the Year. Defensive Lineman of the Year went to Tywain Myles, and Texan Roderick Smith was chosen as co-Freshman of the Year.
