Special E-T Report
The Tarleton State TexAnns won the middle game of a tripleheader at the Lone Star Conference Friday, beating Cameron 4-1.
Storms postponed Thursday's opening game versus Northeastern State, but when the game resumed the TexAnns fell, 2-1. The win over Cameron followed, but Tarleton was eliminated from the tournament by Central Oklahoma that evening, 7-1.
After falling behind one run in the first inning of their tournament opener, four scoreless innings followed. Kelli Gayle singled in the top of the sixth to put the tying run on for the TexAnns, and Nicole Cone had an RBI fly to right center.
Kasi Dobbs singled in the seventh, giving Tarleton a chance to go ahead. A sacrifice bunt moved her to second, and she stole third but was stranded after a strikeout. The Lady Reds managed a run in the bottom of the inning, and the TexAnns were saddled with their first loss of the tournament.
Tarleton bounced back versus Cameron later that day, taking a 2-0 lead in the top of the first. Cone hit an RBI single, and Gayle scored on a throwing error.
Cameron answered with a run in the second, but left three runners stranded.
Tarleton added two insurance runs in the fifth, as Cone tripled to left field to score Brooke Saulters. Cone then scored on a wild pitch.
Their momentum didn't carry over to the third game of the day, though. Gayle hit a triple in the fourth, and Cone grounded out to score her. But Central Oklahoma scored seven unearned runs in the bottom of the inning, and Tarleton could only muster one more hit for the rest of the game.
The TexAnns now await an at-large bid to the 2007 NCAA Division II South Central Regional Tournament. Tarleton was No. 4 in the latest regional poll.
