At the beginning of the week, Stephenville Head Football Coach Chad Morris challenged the Yellow Jackets to be a better football team after Saturday’s Blue vs. Gold scrimmage than they were Monday. Everyone in Jacket-camp agrees—the team met and exceeded that challenge.
"Do you think we improved this week?" Morris asked while addressing his team at the end of Saturday’s scrimmage action. The answer from the players was a resounding yes. "I think so, too," Morris said.
"Now, we have to get better again next week. We have four days of practice to get a lot better (before scrimmaging class 5A Weatherford Friday)," he continued.
Both the offense and defense challenged other varsity players and members of the JV squads Saturday, as a large crowd gathered to take in their first official look at the 2007 edition of Yellow Jacket football.
"We got out of it healthy, and that’s the main thing," Morris said. "We had a kid injured here last year, but we got out healthy today."
The Jackets donned full pads for the first time Friday, and Saturday’s intra-squad competition was the squad’s first taste of full-speed action.
Stephenville has changed its practice schedule to allow coaches to meet teaching requirements with the start of the 2007-08 school year fast approaching. Practices resume Monday, with the workouts scheduled for 6:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.
The Jackets will step on the playing surface at Memorial Stadium for the first time this season when Weatherford visits Friday. All high school teams will be in action, with the scrimmage serving as a final tune-up before the varsity season opener Thursday, Aug. 30 in Waco. Stephenville will battle Midway in the H-E-B Heart of Texas Kickoff Classic at Waco ISD Stadium.
