AUSTIN — Stephenville’s youth wrestlers had their best showing yet at an open tournament here Saturday.

All nine wrestlers entered in the meet finished in either first or second place, coach Beau Mayo said.

“We are really proud of these kids,” he said.

The following five athletes finished in first place: Hunter Mayo, tots, 32 lbs.; Gage Mayfield, tots 45 lbs.; Austin Northcutt, Division I, heavyweight; Clint Mayo, Division II, 58 lbs.; and Grayson Proffitt, Division II, 83 lbs.

Finishing in second place were: Bryson Dill, tots, 45 lbs.; Clayton Mayo, Division I, 42 lbs.; Will Pollock, Division I, 50 lbs.; and Breyson Simmons, Division II, 49 lbs.

Earlier this month, brothers Clint and Clayton Mayo, along with their cousin, Hunter Mayo, represented Stephenville at the U.S. Junior Novice Championships in Oklahoma City, Okla.

Clayton and Hunter both won one match and lost two, while Clint won three matches and lost just one. The losses were the first of the season for Hunter and Clint in the Novice Division. Both youngsters remain undefeated in Texas.

The team also had a strong showing at the Dollamur Cotton Bowl in Frisco late last month. Hunter and Clint Mayo both won first place, in tots and Division II, respectively.

Proffitt finished second in his division. Blu Caylor (Division I, 72 lbs.) and Anneke VanderHorst (Division II, 55 lbs.) both finished fifth, and Valor Castillo (tots, 36 lbs.) placed sixth.

The team’s season concludes next month with the Rookie and Open State Championships Feb. 17 in Houston.
