It was back to work Monday for Coach Fran Metsgar and the Stephenville Honeybees volleyball program.
With 33 sophomores, juniors and seniors attacking the net and 29 incoming freshmen, SHS has a total of 62 student- athletes participating, and more freshmen may be added today, according to Metsgar.
The Bees return six varsity regulars from last season’s Region I quarterfinal club, and will begin the season with scrimmage action Friday and Saturday.
“We know that our passing game needs work so we’re focusing a lot on that,” Metsgar said. “At the same time, we’re not neglecting the other parts of the game.”
Despite the return of half of the 2006 line-up, Metsgar says the varsity Bees do have a couple spots open.
“There’s a lot of talent on the junior varsity team, and I don’t want to pull someone up just to sit,” she said of the possible personnel moves. “I have to decide if we need help more in the front-court or in the back-court.”
The only sure thing this early on is those decisions will come quickly. Stephenville hosts Abilene Cooper and Granbury in scrimmage play at 10 a.m. Friday. All high school squads will then travel to Birdville Saturday for a 9 a.m. multi-team scrimmage event that also includes Northwest and Burleson.
The Honeybees will then open the regular season at home next Tuesday against Burleson. Both high school courts will be used with one freshman game and the junior varsity battle beginning at 5 p.m. The second freshman team and the varsity will follow at 6:30 p.m.
