The playoff-bound Stephenville Yellow Jackets set the stage for a second and final District 7-4A boys basketball showdown with Glen Rose, taking a a 54-32 road victory Friday at Mineral Wells.
Coach Bill Brooks’ Yellow Jackets were scheduled to play Tuesday (Feb. 18) at home in Gandy Gym for Senior Night against Glen Rose, with the varsity game set for 6:30 p.m. The senior players will be honored before the game — their final home appearance of the season before entering the playoffs.
SHS (18-12 overall) and Glen Rose entered that game tied for second place at 4-3 behind district champion Brownwood (7-0). The winner between the Jackets and the Tigers will be the No. 2 playoff seed, while the loser of that game will be third. The second and third place seeds will be paired against either 19-13 Krum or 20-4 Argyle from District 8-4A, in bi-district.
Skylar Stilwell led the Jackets in scoring against the Rams Friday with 13 points, followed by Kendal Storrs with 12 and Grayson Traweek with 10.
“We played a great defensive game and were happy with our overall performance,” Brooks stated.
The Jackets held the Rams to just three points, on a 3-point bucket, in the first period while building a 15-3 advantage. Stephenville led 22-11 at halftime.
SHS outscored the Rams 12-9 in the third quarter, and 20-12 in the final period.
Other scorers for SHS were Aidan Espinoza with eight, Kelvin Ong with five, Brady Morton with three, Calvin Darby with two and Will Boyd with one.
In the first district game between the Yellow Jackets and the Tigers, Jan. 31 at Glen Rose, SHS lost by a 63-53 margin.
Godley will be the fourth-place playoff seed out of District 7, and will take on the District 8-4A champion in the bi-district (first) round of the playoffs. Brownwood’s boys will be paired against Bridgeport — the fourth-place team in District 8 — which was 1-6.
The Rams finished their season at 4-25 overall and were in last place in the five-school district alignment at 0-8.
