The state-ranked Stephenville High School Yellow Jackets rolled to a 4-1 boys soccer victory Tuesday on the road at Rouse High School in Leander.

Coach Taylor Smith’s Yellow Jackets improved to 6-2-2 on the season, getting goals from four different players.

The SHS boys are ranked No. 23 in the state among Class 4A boys teams in Texas by MaxPreps online. Rouse is unranked.

The game was tied at 1-all in the first half, and goal keeper Daniel Osornio came through with a big save on a penalty kick. From that point, SHS recorded three unanwered goals.

Anferny Moreno scored first for the Jackets, off an assist from John Binkley. Next, Binkley scored, getting an assist from Emmanuel Fraga.

J.J. Saldana scored the Jackets’ third goal, with an assist from Jorge Gallegos. Then Gallegos added the fourth goal, as Saldana returned the favor, assisting him.

Smith said that the non-district win was “by far our best game of the year” — with the Jackets coming off their second-place finish in the Stephenville Knights of Columbus Challenge of Champions tournament last weekend.

“I am hoping it is the game we finally ‘figured it out,” Smith said. “I think we’ve found our identity and now just need to keep building upon that. If we continue to play at that level we are going to be a force to be (reckoned) with.”

The Jackets were scheduled to play Friday (Jan. 24) at Fort Worth Western Hills (varsity at 7 p.m.). Their next game is set for Tuesday at home at Lem Brock Field, taking on Abilene Cooper (varsity at 7).

Earlier this week, the SHS boys added a game to their schedule for Jan. 31, which had been an open date. They will play at Wichita Falls High School that day, with the junior varsity at 4 p.m. followed by the varsity at 6 p.m.
