Stephenville High School’s Amiah Rodriguez showed her potential as a runner as a freshman last spring when she was an alternate for the Honeybees’ 800-meter relay team that qualified for the regional meet. Now she’s a state cross country state qualifier as a sophomore.
Based on her finish Monday in the Region I-4A cross country meet held at Mae Simmons Park in Lubbock, Rodriguez advanced to the Class 4A state meet. It will be Nov. 9 at McNeil Park in Round Rock.
Rodriguez earned her spot by placing among the top 10 individual girls who did not qualify for the state meet as part of a team. The top four teams in the girls and boys standings all qualified for state.
The SHS girls placed 10th in the team standings, while the SHS boys took 13th place.
“It’s not surprising that Amiah qualified for the state meet,” stated Beth Phelps, who is in her first season as the SHS girls cross country team. “She has prepared for this all year, with making it to state as her personal goal.
“She has represented Stephenville well and can’t wait to see what she can do in Round Rock.”
In the overall individual standings, Rodriguez crossed the finish line in 24th place with a time of 12:43.50 over the girls’ two-mile course.
The regional champion was Canyon’s Breanna Stuart with a time of 11:28.50. Canyon also took second place with Abree Winfrey’s 11:56.10 finish.
SHS freshman Alex Loyola was the top finisher for the Yellow Jackets in the boys division. He completed the boys’ three-mile course in 17:35.90, for 67th place. The boys regional winner was also from Canyon — Samuel Ashley, who posted a time of 14:46.90.
