Tarleton couldn't complete the comeback from a first-quarter deficit and dropped its first Lone Star Conference game of the season with a 75-64 loss to Angelo State in Wisdom Gym Saturday afternoon.
Tarleton jumped out to a quick 7-2 and ultimately built it up to a 12-6 lead in the first four minutes before an 0-7 spell from the floor with two turnovers opened the door for a 13-0 Angelo State run that put the Rambelles on top 19-12 entering the final two minutes of the opening quarter.
Tarleton's comeback effort started in the first 13 seconds of the second quarter when Katie Webster drained a layup to bring the TexAnns within five at 21-16. The Webster bucket started a 12-5 run that tied the game at 26-26 with 6:28 left in the opening half. Tarleton took a one-point lead on a free throw from Lucy Bensonand held on to a one-possession lead into the final three minutes when Angelo State ended the half on a 9-2 run to put Tarleton behind 39-33 at half.
Out of the break, Tarleton came out swinging once again and used the first five minutes to go on a 16-8 run that put Tarleton on top once again 49-47 with 3:31 left in the quarter. Angelo had an answer again, however, as the Rambelles finished the quarter on a 7-0 run. Tarleton was outscored 21-15 in the fourth quarter en route to its first league loss of the season.
Mackenzie Hailey continued her torrid offensive pace with 19 points on 9-13 shooting with six rebounds, two assists, two blocks, and two steals. McKinley Bostad (15) and Kaylee Allen (13) combined for 28 more on 11-16 shooting from the floor, including a combined 2-4 from downtown.
Lucy Benson scored five off the bench while Kylie Collins poured in six points. Webster, Destiney Winkfield, and Nina Alvarez each scored two points to round out the scoring.
As a team, Tarleton outshot Angelo State from the field .481 to .467 and from downtown .286 to .222. However, the TexAnns struggled at the free throw line (8-14) while Angelo State went 15-18. Tarleton was outrebounded 34-29.
