Despite a fourth-quarter rally, Tarleton couldn't overcome a tough third quarter and overtime as the TexAnns dropped their first game of the season Saturday with an 82-70 loss to Cal Poly Pomona.
The teams came out swinging to the tune of an 11-11 game over the opening five minutes, but a three-ball from Destiney Winkfieldgave Tarleton a 14-11 lead. Lucy Benson followed up with an old-fashioned three-point play to extend the lead to six. The Winkfield trey started a 10-4 Tarleton run over the rest of the quarter to send the TexAnns into the second quarter up 21-15.
Tarleton pushed its lead up to as many as 13 with 3:50 left in the opening half, but the Broncos answered back with a 13-5 run before the break to cut the Tarleton lead to 40-35 at halftime.
In the third, Tarleton surrendered the lead as Pomona outscored the TexAnns 19-10 in the quarter to take a 54-50 lead into the final frame, but the TexAnns would not go quietly.
Kaylee Allen hit back-to-back jumpers to open the fourth quarter and tie the game at 54-54. The teams traded buckets into the final two minutes with Tarleton never leading by more than four. McKinley Bostad hit a pair of free throws to extend the lead out to four with 1:45 left but Pomona hit two layups before the buzzer sounded to force overtime.
Pomona opened the overtime period on an 11-0 run and ultimately outscored Tarleton 15-3 in the extra five minutes to take the win.
Bostad led the team with 14 points while Mackenzie Hailey (11) and Allen (10) also scored in double figures. Kylie Collins and Lucy Benson each poured in a season-high nine points while Katie Webster went for seven points and eight boards. Kandyn Faurie(6), Winkfield (3), and Nina Alvarez (1) rounded out the scoring.
Tarleton will return home this week for a pre-Thanksgiving rematch of last year's regional tournament appearance against Lubbock Christian. The TexAnns will tip-off at 5:30 p.m. in Stephenville. All fans who bring non-perishable donations for the Tarleton Food Pantry will receive free admission.
