The first regular-season volleyball match for Shay Douglas as the new head coach of the Stephenville Honeybees turned out to be close, but no cigar, for the former SHS standout.
The Class 4A Honeybees, playing on the road against Class 5A Burleson High School, held a 2-1 lead in sets before falling, 25-19, 17-25, 22-25, 25-19, 15-7.
“I thought the girls played hard,” said Douglas, who was an all-state performer for the Honeybees and a member of the SHS state championship team in 2003 under the coach she has just replaced, Frances Metzger.
Jayci Morton led the Honeybees in kills with 13, while Salette Rios and Chloe Goodman had 10 each.
Hannah Huckabee posted a team-high 30 assists and Karlee Easterling added 13.
Aubreyanna Ziegler led in blocks, with six, and Jaydi Griffin had three.
Rios and Gabie Lucero recorded 30 and 26 digs, respectively, and Lucero served two aces.
“We are still working through some things on both the defensive and offensive side of the ball. We have a big weekend ahead of us as we travel to the Denton Ryan Tournament.”
The Honeybees are competing in the three-day Denton tournament this weekend. After two days of pool play, the teams will be sorted out into bracket play starting on the final day, Saturday.
After matches Aug. 14 in Krum, and Aug. 16-18 in the Granbury tournament, the Honeybees finally will have their regular-season home opener on Aug. 21, taking on Abilene Cooper (varsity at 6 p.m.).
