The Yellow Jacket baseball team is one victory away from clinching third place in the District 8-4A standings, after clinching a playoff spot Friday with an 11-1 road win over Waxahachie Life as Mason Castleberry allowed just one hit in his five-inning complete-game victory.
Coach Justin Swenson’s Jackets are 12-12-2 overall and 6-5 in district play entering this Friday’s game at Glen Rose. The Jackets had their open date Tuesday. Glen Rose lost a 17-1 decision to sixth-ranked Godley Friday, but the Tigers edged the Jackets 3-2 in their first district meeting April 3 in Stephenville.
Castleberry earned the victory on the mound over Life School, striking out nine and walking just three in the five-inning gem. The only run he game up came in the top of the fifth, when SHS already owned a 9-0 lead.
The Jackets collected just six hits overall, with Gabe Moore and Trevor Easter providing two each. Easter drove in a pair of runs. Derek Gifford, Easter and Moore all had doubles for the Jackets.
Stephenville scored one in the bottom of the second inning, three in the third, five in the fourth and two in the fifth.
Friday’s game — the regular-season finale for both teams — is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Friday.
The fourth-place team, either Glen Rose or Stephenville, will be paired against Kennedale in the bi-district rounds of the playoffs. The third-place finisher will take on either Benbrook or Fort Worth Castleberry.
Kennedale was the team SHS eliminated last season, two games to one in their best-of-three bi-district playoff series. They reached the third round before falling to Godley.
