Tarleton swept St. Edward's in blowout fashion in Tuesday's doubleheader to win 40 games in a season for just the second time in program history. The single season record for wins is 41 in 2003.
"This group has worked extremely hard all year to get to this point and I'm proud of them for that, but we're not going to be content with a 40-win season," said head coach Mark Cumpian. "Forty wins is just one step on the way to where we want to be as a program."
Game 1: No. 16 Tarleton 15, St. Edward's 5 (5)
Tarleton started scoring right off the bat, beginning with a leadoff home run from Georgia Capell, and would not stop as they cruised to a 15-5 win in the doubleheader opener.
After the Capell long shot put the TexAnns on the board, Meghann Wrinkle and Nyka Wood reached on a single and walk to set up Megan Durante, who teed off to deep left center for a three-run home run and a 4-0 Tarleton lead. Tarleton tacked on two more in the inning on an RBI single from Maddie Quintanar and an error to jump out to a 6-0 lead after one.
Karli Herron and Elizabeth Svienty kept the runs coming with RBI singles in the second to extend the lead out to 8-0.
Following a four-run inning from the Hilltoppers, Tarleton got those runs back and then some - starting with a two-run home run by Nyka Wood. Svienty added a two-run double into left center before Kadyn Kirkpatrick came off the bench and delivered a two-run single up the middle to complete the second six-run inning of the game.
Amanda Conner added the final run of the game for the TexAnns in the fourth with an RBI single while St. Edward's could add only one more run in the fifth before the game wrapped up.
Tarleton pounded out 16 hits for the game, led by a 3-3 effort from Svienty with two runs scored and three RBI. Marisa Flores and Wrinkle boasted two-hit games while Capell, Wood, Durante, Tanna Huie, Lexi Grimaldo, Conner, Herron, Quintanar, and Kirkpatrick had one hit each.
Jordan Withrow threw the first two innings, allowing one hit, before giving way to Haley Freyman and Julia Wernet out of the bullpen. Wernet earned the win with three innings of relief, allowing one run on five hits and two walks.
Game 2: No. 16 Tarleton 17, St. Edward's 2 (5)
Back-to-back eight-run innings by the TexAnns powered Tarleton to their 40th win of the season in a 17-2 win over the Hilltoppers.
Once again, Capell led off the game with a solo home run to put the TexAnns on the board and that 1-0 lead would carry into the third after Tarleton's only scoreless inning of the afternoon in the second.
Tarleton quickly got back in the run column when Destiny Crumpleyblasted off for a grand slam home run to deep left field to push the TexAnn lead out to 5-0. After a single from Huie and a double from Flores, Grimaldo drove in one with an RBI single. An error by St. Edward's and a two-RBI single from Wrinkle capped off an eight-run third inning for Tarleton to push the lead out to 9-0.
After St. Edward's plated a pair, Tarleton made sure the day would end after five innings as the TexAnns struck for another eight spot - all with two outs.
Kaitlyn Thomas floated a RBI single into left to start the scoring and Conner followed up with an RBI double into left for an 11-2 edge. Tarleton added an RBI single from Wrinkle, a two-RBI double from Durante, an RBI double from Crumpley, and then a two-run home run from Kirkpatrick off the bench to cap off the inning.
Crumpley paced the offense in game two with a 3-4 day at the plate with two runs scored and five RBI while Wrinkle went 3-4 with two runs scored and three RBI. Tanna Huie also had a two-hit day while Capell, Conner, Durante, Kirkpatrick, Flores, Grimaldo, and Thomas had one hit each in the 15-hit effort.
Megan Rosewell went the distance in the circle, tossing all seven innings and allowing two runs on eight hits, to earn her 12th win of the season.
Tarleton will head to Wichita Falls this weekend for a three-game conference series against Midwestern State, beginning Friday at 7 p.m.
