Stephenville High School’s girls and boys tennis teams soaked up some valuable experience in the tough Killeen Ellison High School tournament.
Most of the schools competing in the tournament are in larger classifications than Stephenville including Killeen High, Killeen Shoemaker, Ellison, Copperas Cove, Pflugerville and Round Rock from the state’s largest classification, Class 6A.
“It was a tough tournament, with bigger schools,” SHS tennis coach Fran Metzger said of the tournament. “It was good experience for us.”
The Yellow Jackets and the Honeybees will compete in the District 8-4A tennis tournament starting at 8 a.m. Thursday at Midlothian Heritage High School. The semifinals and finals, along with all of the junior varsity competition, will be played there on Friday.
The Region I-4A individual qualifiers (first and second place in each event) will advance to compete April 18-19 at the McLeod Tennis Complex in Lubbock for the chance to qualify for the state tournament.
In boys doubles, the SHS team of Dylan Jones and Silvario Vasquez were eliminated in the second round of the main draw by a team from Copperas Cove, 8-0.
Stephenville’s girls doubles duo of Matti Stephens and Odalys Salazar were knocked out of the tournament in the second round of the consolation bracket by a team from Copperas Cove, 8-4.
In girls singles, Stephenville’s Kameron Terrell was eliminated in the consolation quarterfinals by Victoria Harrison of Killeen High, 8-3. On the top half of the girls singles bracket, Ashton Garner of SHS lost in the first round consolation to Mellen Olazabel of Pflugerville, 8-5.
In mixed doubles, the SHS team of Lucy Tackett and Abner Mendoza fell in the second round of the consolation bracket to a team from Killeen Shoemaker. The other SHS mixed doubles team also was eliminated in the second round of consolation, by a team from Waco University.
