The Stephenville Honeybees’ impressive 14-game win streak was sidetracked Friday in a shootout loss to Brownwood, but the team’s key players got some rest in a game that, essentially, didn’t matter in the overall scheme of things.

The teams battled to a 2-2 draw in regulation, and the Lady Lions went home with a 4-3 shootout victory at Lem Brock Field.

The defending Class 4A state champion Honeybees already had captured the District 4-4A championship, and the No. 1 playoff seed, prior to the contest, which was the final regular-season game.

The two goals during regulation for the Honeybees were made by Beatris Chavarria and Ciara Johnston.

Coach Casey Weil’s Honeybees finished district with an 8-1 record, and are 20-3 overall going into the playoffs.

The Honeybees had posted shutouts in 13 of their last 14 games before giving up two goals to Brownwood.

In the bi-district round of the playoffs, the Honeybees will play Burkburnett, the fourth-place team out of District 3-4A. That matchup is scheduled for 8 p.m. Thursday at Graham High School.

Weil stated that the Honeybees played hard, and some key players were able to get some “much-needed rest” in the loss as other players recorded playing time to gain more experience.

“I think going into the playoffs the fresher we are the better we will be,” Weil said. “I’m excited about the playoffs because we get to play somebody else other than Brownwood, Mineral Wells or Abilene Wylie.”

Friday’s Brownwood contest was Senior Night for SHS soccer. The Honeybees honored their three senior players — Natalie Elizondo, Alexis De Los Santos and Karsyn Kimbrough.
