A win is a win, but the Stephenville Yellow Jackets did it the hard way — with a ninth-inning walkoff single by Derek Gifford — in their 10-9 District 8-4A baseball triumph at home over Alvarado.

Gifford drove in the winning run with a single as the Jackets grabbed their first district win of the season, at James T. Young baseball field.

Coach Justin Swenson’s Yellow Jackets (1-2 in district, 6-8-2 overall) had built an 8-2 lead by the bottom of the fourth inning, when they scored four runs.

But Alvarado rallied to take a 9-8 lead with four in the sixth and three in the seventh. SHS sent the game into extra innings with a run in the bottom of the seventh.

The Jackets enjoyed an 11-6 margin in hits, including 2-for-5 performances from both Kade Averhoff and Gifford. Gabe Moore and Gifford drove in two runs each.

Daniel Luna started on the mound and worked the first five innings, giving up five runs on three hits. Caleb Smith then allowed four runs on three hits in two innings. Mason Castleberry got the win, working the final two frames without giving up a hit while striking out three.

The Jackets are scheduled to play Friday against Godley. They have a game scheduled for Saturday at Decatur starting at 2 p.m. Their next district game is slated for Tuesday on the road against Waxahachie Life School.
