Tarleton men's basketball remains ninth in the second release of the NCAA South Central regional rankings.
The Texans are 17-9 overall and ranked third in the Lone Star Conference with an 11-5 record. The Texans have won five straight games after last Saturday's 98-50 win over Northern New Mexico. The four-time regional champions have qualified for the NCAA tournament in eight straight seasons and 13 of the last 15 seasons. The Texans are 13-9 against Division II teams and have a 13-7 in-region record.
The first poll of the season is not without its share of Lone Star Conference schools as the LSC is responsible for five of the top 10 teams. West Texas A&M is the No. 1 seed, followed by UT Permian Basin (2), Texas A&M-Commerce (8), and Angelo State (10).
The Heartland Conference is represented by two teams: Arkansas-Fort Smith (3) and Dallas Baptist (6). The Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference has the remaining three representatives in Fort Lewis (4), Regis (5), and Colorado School of Mines (7).
There will be one more poll before the 64 teams are selected to compete for a National Championship. The NCAA South Central regional tournament will consist of the tournament champions of the Lone Star, Rocky Mountain Athletic and Heartland conferences as well as five at-large teams. The top seed in the region will be the tournament host. The NCAA Division II Selection Show will take place on Sunday, March 4 at 10:30 p.m. on NCAA.com.
Tarleton has hosted the NCAA South Central Regional Tournament four times, most recently in the 2014-15 season when they earned their third trip to the NCAA Elite Eight in school history. Tarleton's four regional championships are the most in LSC history.
The Texans have two games remaining - all at home this week against UT Permian Basin and West Texas A&M to close out the regular season. The Texans host UTPB on Thursday, Feb. 22, at 7:30 p.m. and WT on Saturday, Feb. 24, at 4 p.m. for Senior Day.
