COMMERCE - Tarleton had chances but went 4-27 at the plate with runners on base and suffered its first two losses of the season to begin Lone Star Conference play Saturday afternoon.
Game 1: Texas A&M-Commerce 4, Tarleton 3
Despite putting together a valiant seventh-inning rally, Tarleton suffered its first loss of the season in the series opener at Texas A&M-Commerce Saturday afternoon.
The Lions struck first and held a slim 1-0 lead over the first three innings before Tarleton broke through with a two-run home run off the bat of Tanna Huie with two outs in the top of the fourth. The Huie homer plated Gerogia Capell, who singled with one away in the inning.
Two innings later, Commerce retook the lead with a two-run home run and then added one more in the sixth on an RBI double.
Tarleton wouldn't go down easily, though.
With two outs and Marisa Flores on first, Amanda Conner kept the game alive with a pinch-hit double to right center. Then, Meghann Wrinkle drove in a run with an RBI single to center to put the tying run 60 feet away, but the TexAnns couldn't push that run across and the game ended in a 4-3 final.
Tarleton had seven hits in the game but were just 3-14 with runners on. Wrinkle led the offense with two hits while Conner, Capell, Huie, Karli Herron, and Flores had one hit each.
Jordan Withrow took the loss to fall to 5-1 on the year. The sophomore right-hander threw the first 5.1 innings allowing four runs - three earned - on four hits and four walks with seven strikeouts. Haley Freyman came out of the bullpen to get the final two outs of the sixth inning.
Game 2: Texas A&M-Commerce 6, Tarleton 1
A pair of late three-run innings spelled doom for Tarleton once again as the Lions took the series with a doubleheader sweep Saturday afternoon.
As was the case in the first game, struggles pushing runners around the bases plagued the TexAnns as Tarleton was 1-13 (0.077) with runners on base in the nightcap.
The TexAnns scored one in the second on an RBI single from Marisa Flores. That lead held through four innings before Lions scored three in the fifth and three in the sixth to pull away.
Tarleton managed just four hits - one each from Nyka Wood, Capell, Flores, and Kloe Corbin - while Freyman took the loss in the circle. The senior pitcher threw 5.1 innings allowing six runs - five earned - on eight hits and four walks. Jordan Withrow got the final two outs of the sixth.
The TexAnns will look to salvage the final game of the series today at 1 p.m. in Commerce.
