The Stephenville High School boys got off to a strong start Thursday in their first game of the Texas Bank Holiday Classic in Brownwood, defeating Early by a 60-45 margin.

The leading scorer in the game for coach Bill Brook’s Yellow Jackets was Skylar Stilwell with 20 points. Teammate Cody Storrs was next with 10 points, and added four assists and seven rebounds.

Teammate Quade Griffin recorded 8 points and 8 rebounds

SHS had a 38-33 edge in total rebounds, and recorded nine steals in all.

Stephenville outscored Early in each quarter, and led 34-27 at halftime. The Jackets held the Longhorns to just three points in the fourth quarter while scoring 10 for the final 15-point margin.

The Jackets defense held Early to 26 percent from the field overall. Offensively, Stephenville made 39 percent (20 of 51).

SHS sank 14 of 24 free throw tries, while Early made 10 of 16.

The Jackets are scheduled to play Colorado City Friday morning, then have a second game later in the day. The tournament is set to conclude Saturday.
