The Stephenville High School girls basketball team played one game Thursday in the Girls Blue Division of the 60th annual Whataburger Basketball Tournament in Fort Worth, falling to Bowie 50-37 in the opening round at Saginaw High School’s gym.
Coach Alan Thorpe’s Honeybees entered the tournament ranked No. 15 in the state in the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches Class 4A state poll. They are now 9-8 on the season.
The Honeybees were led offensively in the Bowie game by Jayci Morton and Jordan Carter with 7 points each. Madison Carter added 5 points.
Bowie’s offense was powered by 5-8 senior Kamryn Cantwell, who poured in 25 points. Of her total, 21 points came in the first half. She had just one field goal and two free throws after halftime.
The Honeybees fell behind early, as the Lady Jackrabbits built an 18-6 lead by the close of the first quarter.
Bowie outscored SHS 16-13 in the second quarter for a 34-19 advantage. The scoring slowed in the second half when Bowie had a 9-6 edge in the third quarter and only a one-point advantage, 11-10 in the final quarter.
The Honeybees moved to the consolation bracket, and are scheduled to play early Friday morning.
The Girls Blue Division has eight schools competing. The tournament, which also includes boys divisions, will conclude Saturday.
