WICHITA FALLS — The Stephenville Yellow Jackets defeated Pampa 63-34 in their Class 4A, Div. I area football playoff game Friday night at Memorial Stadium in Wichita Falls.
Coach Greg Winder's District 3-4A, Div. I champion Yellow Jackets, now 10-2 on the season with their sixth win in a row, will take on District 4-4A, Div. I champion Argyle (12-0) in the third round (regional playoff). That game will be played Friday, Dec. 1, at Vernon Newsom Stadium in Mansfield, with a 7 p.m. kickoff.
“We’re playing football in December, and that’s awesome,” Winder said. “I’m just proud for our young men and coaches, as hard as they have worked. All the hard work paid off.”
Tickets for the Argyle playoff game will be $6 for adults and $4 for students in advance. All tickets will be $8 at the gate. Argyle won a coin flip to be the home team.
Argyle, ranked third in the state in Class 4A by the Associated Press, dominated Levelland 66-8 in its area playoff game Friday to advance.
Stephenville racked up nine touchdowns against Pampa, with eight different players getting in on the scoring for the Jackets.
SHS senior quarterback Easton Jones threw four TD passes and completed 22 of 25 passes for 266 yards in the win over Pampa. He also ran for a 7-yard score.
After Pampa managed to tie the game at 14 in the first quarter, Stephenville recorded five consecutive TDs, outscoring the Harvesters 28-0 in the second quarter. Stephenville’s defense held the Harvesters scoreless in both the second and fourth quarters. Gage Graham intercepted two passes for Stehphenville, and Zane Walker picked off one and returned it 60 yards for a TD — one of four scores the Jackets notched on their way to a 49-14 halftime lead. Pampa outscored the Jackets 20-14 in the third quarter.
“Give Pampa credit. They never stopped battling,” Winder said.
Blu Caylor scored on runs of 3 and 7 yards for the Jackets, and fellow linebacker Zane Walker recorded a defensive TD when he returned an interception 60 yards.
Stephenville’s TD pass receptions were by Gage Graham for 41 yards, Blake Aragon for 3 yards, Krece Nowak for 34 yards, and Cole Stanley for 8 yards.
Nowak, a junior who leads SHS in rushing and scoring, ran for a team-leading 108 yards on 16 carries, including a 9-yard scoring play.
Friday’s victory was the second-highest scoring total this season for the Jackets, who have recorded at least 28 points in all 10 of their wins. They have scored 41 points or more seven times.
“Our offense is special. They are one of a kind,” said Caylor, who leads the SHS defense in tackles this season. “Offensively, I think we’re the best in the state. We have a great offense.”
The winner of the Stephenville-Argyle playoff will play either Decatur or Wichita Falls Hirschi in the Class 4A, Div. I state quarterfinal round the following week.
Stephenville defeated Decatur 41-20 in a non-district matchup on Sept. 22.
