Christian Brown, a junior at Stephenville High School, will be “in the mix” according to his coach, Kristi Mayes, when he competes for the Class 4A boys state cross country championship Saturday, Nov. 4, in Round Rock.

Brown qualified for the state meet by finishing eighth in the Region I-4A meet held Oct. 23 in Lubbock. His time of 16:34.19 was 23 seconds faster than his previous personal best. The top 10 individuals who were not members of state-qualifying teams advanced to state.

Mayes believes this is the first time an SHS boy has qualified for the state cross country meet.

“He’s in the hunt to do some good things,” Mayes said. “He’s in the mix. He’s been looking real strong.”

Mayes said that Brown has been working out with teammate Luis Carrillo to help him maintain his pacing during practice.

“He’s excited to represent Stephenville, and the cross country program,” Mayes said. “He’s ready to race.”

Mayes said Brown has had significant development as a runner since his sophomore year, especially in the way he closes races.

“He has improved by leaps and bounds from where he was last year,” Mayes said.

The state cross country meet is being held at Old Settlers Park in Round Rock. The starting time for the Class 4A boys race is scheduled to start at 3:10 p.m.
