DENTON - No. 14 Tarleton got Lone Star Conference play started the right way as the TexAnns handled Texas Woman's in four sets at Kitty Magee Arena Friday night.
Tarleton stumbled out of the gate as Texas Woman's was able to steal the opening set of conference play 25-21, but the No. 14 team in the country wouldn't stay down for long as the TexAnns roared back in the second set beginning with a quick 2-0 advantage.
Tarleton poured it on early in the second set as the TexAnns turned the 2-0 lead into a 12-4 lead after a run of six straight points served up by Michaela Rodriguez. Tarleton turned the momentum of the set with the six unanswered points off two Roberts kills, a Rodriguez ace, and three straight blocks by Hannah McManus - two paired with Jordyn Keamo and one with Roberts.
After a Pioneers timeout, Roberts landed a kill shot to extend the lead to double digits and the TexAnns closed out the set with eight of the next 17 points to even the match at one set each.
Tarleton continued its dominance in the third set as the TexAnns held Texas Woman's without consecutive points over the set's first 18 volleys while Tarleton built an 11-7 advantage.
Texas Woman's clawed back to even the set on multiple occasions and take a brief 20-19 lead, but Keamo put down a kill to even the set at 20-20 and Amber Strange put Tarleton on top in the set for good with a kill. The Pioneers committed four unforced errors over the final five points as Tarleton took the set 25-21.
Another hot start helped Tarleton cruise to the four-set win as the TexAnns jumped out to a 14-5 lead over the opening 19 points. Texas Woman's pulled back within six with a quick surge, but Keamo and Strange struck back-to-back once again with kill shots to force the Pioneers into a timeout at 17-9. Out of the break, Tarleton pushed its lead to 22-16 before a Roberts kill, a Blanca Izquierdo ace, and Texas Woman's error sent Tarleton to a 1-0 mark in Lone Star Conference action.
Roberts led the way offensively with 19 kills on a .447 hitting clip to go along with 11 digs for her seventh double-double performance of the season. Adrianna Knutson led the defense with 19 digs while Keamo (31) and Izquierdo (15) combined for 46 assists.
As a team, the TexAnns hit .285 and got 34 combined kills from McManus (9), Darthuy (8), Strange (7), Keamo (6), and Chandler Gow (4).
Tarleton will head to Texas A&M-Commerce for a 2 p.m. showdown with the Lions Saturday afternoon.
