It didn’t take long for Stephenville’s 7 on 7 football team to qualify for the 2017 state tournament.

The Stephenville qualified for state in its first tournament of the 7 on 7 season last Saturday in Gatesville. The qualifiers from each State Qualifying Tournament (SQT), which includes the Gatesville event, have a berth in the Division II state tournament, June 29-30 in College Station.

Stephenville defeated Glen Rose, 20-13, in the semifinal round qualifying game. The final, against Gatesville, wasn't played because it was not needed to decide the qualifiers. The first round for Stephenville was a 32-20 victory over China Spring, followed by a 46-15 decision over Hillsboro and a 45-32 win over McGregor.

So far 17 teams across the state have qualified for the Division II tournament, which will include Class 4A, 3A, 2A and A. Three schools have qualified in Division I, for Class 6A and 5A.

The schedule for the Stephenville squad continues this Saturday in the Brock tournament. League play starts June 6 at Burleson, and will also include later trips to Aledo, Brownwood and Weatherford.
