Stephenville’s first-year semi-pro football team won its first playoff game last weekend, and its second-round matchup will be Saturday in Whitney.

The Erath County Coyotes, who compete in the Central Region of the Texas United Football League (TUFL), defeated the Dallas-Fort Worth Diamondbacks 28-10 in Granbury last Saturday in the opening round of the playoffs.

This Saturday at 7 p.m. in Whitney, the 8-3 Coyotes will take on the Central Texas Apaches.

If the Coyotes win that game, they will advance to the TUFL semifinals.

Jase Schumacher, team owner and head coach of the Coyotes, said he moved the team from Lampasas after the 2015 season. The Coyote roster includes former Tarleton State University players Cody Travis (offensive lineman) and Jeremy Lewis (free safety), along with former Stephenville High School offensive lineman Cody Hook.

When the team was in Lampasas last season, the team known as the Lightning won the league championship and won 12 of its 13 games, Schumacher said. The Coyotes have five players on their roster who played for the Lightning.

Most of the players on the 52-man Coyote roster are from either Hico, Granbury, Tolar or Santo, according to Schumacher.
