After the Tarleton defense put together a spectacular performance in last weekend's conference opener, the team's top tackler was recognized by the Lone Star Conference as the league's defensive player of the week.
Cody Burtscher, a senior linebacker from Glen Rose, continued to add to his team-leading tackle total as he totaled 11 tackles, including 0.5 for a loss and 0.5 sack with a fumble recovery and three quarterback hurries. With his team-high 11 tackles, Burtscher extended his streak of double-digit tackle performances to eight in a row dating back to last year.
The Burtscher-led Texans held Angelo State to just five points on 222 yards of total offense. The five points allowed is the first time since Oct. 24, 2009 that Tarleton has held a conference opponent to fewer than 10 points. The 222 total yards is the fewest allowed by Tarleton since Oct. 11, 2014.
This is the first career player of the week award for Burtscher.
Tarleton will return to action this weekend when the Texans travel north to Canyon for a 6 p.m. showdown in Canyon against West Texas A&M on Saturday.
