Garner taught school in the towns of Gustine, Carbon and Gorman; and he was the superintendent at Lingleville ISD from 1962 until his retirement in 1992. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and going to old house playing dominoes and poker.

Garner loved riding around and listening to Brownwood Lions football, watching Texas Rangers baseball and both UT and Dallas Cowboys football.

Those left to cherish his memories include his son, Benny Rice and wife, Denean of Brookesmith; daughters Dana Worrell and husband, Randy of Stephenville and Marsha Rice of Ft. Worth; grandchildren Randi and Ray Slayton, Rusty and Amber Rice and Tanner Stasey; and great grandchildren Tristen, Landon, Emma, Kelby and Kelton.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Verita Rice; brother, Delburn Rice and nephew, Wendell Rice.
