A grandfather and his three-year-old grandson are dead following an apparent murder-suicide. Law enforcement officials with the Erath County sheriff and district attorney's offices and Texas Rangers responded to CR 309 - off of FM 219 near Purves - Friday afternoon to investigate the incident, according to Sheriff Tommy Bryant.

County dispatchers received the call for help at about 3 p.m., Bryant said.

"It was reported that at about 2:30 p.m. Jose Antonio Torres, 35, went home and became enraged when his 15-year-old daughter was not home taking care of her child," Bryant said, adding the teen mom's alleged lack of interest in her three-year-old son had reportedly been an issue in the past. "He didn't believe his daughter was taking care of the child the way she should, and he was very angry she was not home at the time."

At that point, Jose Torres forcibly took the child in question - Miguel Angel Torres - from the residence, according to Bryant.

"While he was removing the child from the home, Torres reportedly shot at his wife, Francisca Torres, 34," Bryant continued. "Mrs. Torres ran across a field and avoided being struck by the bullet."

Jose Torres then reportedly took his grandson away from the residence in a Chevy truck, according to Bryant.

"He then drove a few hundred yards away from the home. Mrs. Torres followed in the pickup's direction until she found her husband and grandson dead," he said. Both had gunshot wounds to their heads."

The bodies of the deceased have been sent to the Tarrant County Medical Examiner's Office for autopsies, Bryant concluded.
