Dublin police say they are closing in on vandals who desecrated the new Veteran's Memorial last week.
According to Sgt. Ken Drozeski, the stone that was spray painted has a State of Texas emblem engraved on the surface. The numeral “254” was spray inside of the state image. The numeral encompassed within the State of Texas is a known gang identification emblem.
Drozeski said he believes the culprits are minors who are involved in a “wannabe gang.”
“We are narrowing down our list of suspects and hope to make an arrest soon,” Drozeski said.
Dublin citizens and veterans worked for a year raising funds for the five granite stones at a cost of $5,500 each.
“The people think it's terrible,” Dublin Mayor James “Red” Seigars said. “They're ready to kill whoever did it. I've heard comments like, ‘I wish I could find them first,' It's a shame people can't leave things alone. I don't like it and I hope they catch who it is and they are severely punished.”
Seigars said the memorial does have large security lights, but that it would have only taken a minute to commit the act.
